Safeguarding Children

The Presentation Brothers are committed to following the guidelines set out by The National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC).

These guidelines are published on the website www.safeguarding.ie

The Presentation Brothers have also published "Child Safeguarding - Protection Policy and Procedures" (pdf) providing details of current practice.

The Brothers are committed to implementing the appropriate national guidelines for dealing with complaints relating to child sexual abuse, and will respond to the best of their ability to any person who comes to them with a complaint. Accordingly the Brothers have appointed a Child Safeguarding Designated Officer in every unit of the Congregation to meet with people who have complaints to make:

Faoiseamh Helpline was founded by the Conference of Religious in Ireland (CORI) to provide a private and confidential listening service, and face to face counseling for adults (and their families) who were abused by religious or clergy when they were children. It is financed by Religious (including the Presentation Brothers) but it is an independent service. The identities of the people who call are not disclosed to the Brothers or to anyone.

In February 2011 the Irish bishops, the Conference of Religious of Ireland, and the Irish Missionary Union launched a new Catholic counselling and support service, for survivors of abuse, called Towards Healing. This counselling service, which continues the important work of Faoiseamh, offers survivors a professional and caring environment by providing a wide range of support services.

The normal opening hours for the Towards Healing service are: Mondays and Wednesdays, 11am to 8pm and on Fridays 11am to 4pm.

Its freephone helpline numbers are: from the Republic of Ireland 1800 303416; from Northern Ireland and Britain 0800 0963315. The Helpline operates on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11am to 8pm and on Fridays from 11am to 4pm: 1800 33 1234 (Republic of Ireland) 0800 97 3272 (Northern Ireland and the UK).

Statement of Congregation of Presentation Brothers in response to publication of Ryan Report, May 2009

The Presentation Brothers were responsible for one institution investigated by the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, viz. St. Joseph's Industrial School, Greenmount, Cork.

We accept fully the findings and the recommendations of the Commission.

We reiterate our deepest and most sincere apology to survivors of St. Joseph's Industrial School who suffered abuse. We beg forgiveness for what occurred.

While listening to and responding to the needs of the survivors of St. Joseph's Industrial School is our principal objective, we desire to work with all relevant parties including Government and other Religious Congregations as part of a wider response to the needs of all those who were abused. In this context and in terms of our resources we commit ourselves to making a significant contribution to the advancement of this process.
